Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)
[Provisional Translation]
(Abridged)
Q&As
(Abridged)
REPORTER: I have a question concerning Japanese nationals who were abducted by North Korea. A photo of a woman believed to be one of the abductees, Ms. Kyoko Matsumoto, was provided to the Embassy of Japan in Seoul. Will the Government be verifying whether or not the woman is Ms. Matsumoto? Can you please explain how the Government intends to respond to this matter at this time?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Firstly, we collect and analyze information every day regarding the abductees using a variety of channels. However, I would like to refrain from responding about the details as it may undermine our response going forward. This is not the only time that the Government obtained information. We get all kinds of information, which we analyze, and while doing so we take a range of measures to enable the abductees to return to Japan as quickly as possible. However, in principle, I would like to refrain from going into further detail.
REPORTER: The Government advocates for the resolution of the abductions issue as quickly as possible. I understand that the Prime Minister will be meeting with the families of the abductees today. Will the Prime Minister be providing an explanation about the dissolution of the House of Representatives?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: I have no knowledge of this.
