Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga

(Abridged)

Q&As

(Abridged)

REPORTER: It has been confirmed that the Prime Minister will hold a meeting with President Hollande of France during his attendance at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). In yesterday’s press conference you stated that the Government will indicate to France its intention to bring forward the establishment of an International Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Collection Unit as part of Japan’s counter terrorism measures. Does the Government intend to announce any other measures about how it will contribute, from the perspective of cooperation with France and other countries concerned?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Arrangements are still being made for the summit meeting and I have not received any report that a final decision has been made with regard to the meeting. In any event, the Prime Minister’s schedule of summit meetings is still being coordinated. With regard to counter-terrorism, however hard a country may try to engage independently in measures it is not so simple to achieve results, and therefore it is most important for the relevant countries to closely share the information they have. My understanding is that the Prime Minister will be talking about various measures, including the Government’s efforts to establish a unit for the collection of intelligence in emergency situations.
