Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)
[Provisional Translation]
Q&As
REPORTER: I have a question concerning counter-terrorism measures. In the forum of the G20 Summit the Prime Minister has stated that Japan will engage actively in efforts to thoroughly eliminate terrorism, indicating his intention to join with the international community in combating terrorism. In specific terms, what kind of contribution to the war on terror, against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other organizations, is the Government considering?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Firstly, among counter-terrorism measures the Government will strengthen efforts to gather intelligence. At the same time, border controls will be strengthened, and security and patrols at related facilities will also be stepped up. In addition, another extremely important measure is to cut off sources of funding to terrorists. As we move to implement such measures it will be of vital importance to share various sources of terror-related intelligence with countries concerned. The Government will make an active response in this regard and we are of course considering expedited measures to strengthen the functions of an intelligence gathering unit.
