REPORTER: A short while ago, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia was here to see the Prime Minister. I understand the US-2 flying boat of the Self-Defense Forces was among the topics that were discussed. Can you please tell us what kind of exchanges took place?

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: What I have been briefed is that today, from 8:45 AM for about 15 minutes, Prime Minister Abe received a courtesy call from a delegation led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia who is visiting Japan. The Speaker expressed his appreciation for the Japanese Government’s effective cooperation and proactive contribution to regional peace and stability, including the issue of the South China Sea. In addition, in regard to the economic sector, the Speaker welcomed the advancement of bilateral cooperation in infrastructure and other fields. In regard to the defense sector, the Speaker expressed hopes for expanded cooperation in the field of defense equipment, and stated that Indonesia is interested in and considering the procurement of Japan’s US-2 flying boat. Prime Minister Abe expressed pleasure that bilateral cooperation has deepened also in the field of security in addition to the economic and political fields. Furthermore, Prime Minister Abe said he was concerned about unilateral actions that change the status quo in the South China Sea, and stated that it was important for ASEAN to send out a unified message. The Prime Minister hoped that Indonesia would be actively involved in this effort. As time was limited, this was the extent of their discussion.
