Press Conference by the Chief Cabinet Secretary (Excerpt)

[Provisional Translation]

Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: We are delighted that Dr. Takaaki Kajita was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics yesterday. Prime Minister Abe extended his personal congratulations to Dr. Kajita directly over the phone last evening. This year’s prize recognized that a new world was opened up as a result of the outcomes of experiments that essentially rewrote textbooks in the field of particle physics. The discovery had a significant impact on the academic world. This award follows on from the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Dr. Satoshi Omura two days ago, and has doubled our joy. Japan ranks fifth in the world for the number of Nobel Prize recipients in the natural sciences. In terms of the number since 2001, Japan ranks second in the world following the United States. This is wholly because the world has recognized the high level of academic research in Japan. The Government will continue to advance its efforts to promote policies on science, technology, and innovation, including diverse basic research.
