Q&As
REPORTER: During the Japan-Russia summit meeting, the leaders agreed to make progress on the peace treaty negotiations, among other matters. Can you please share your assessment of the meeting?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: First of all, with regard to the Japan-Russia summit meeting, I have been briefed that frank and wide-ranging discussions took place between Prime Minister Abe and President Vladimir Putin regarding the future of the Japan-Russia relationship, including the negotiations for the conclusion of a peace treaty. During the meeting, the two leaders shared a common understanding on the following: 1) Seek progress in the negotiations regarding the territorial issue to create a solution acceptable to both sides; 2) Continue dialogue between the two leaders by holding summit meetings, utilizing the occasions of G20 and APEC meetings; and 3) Continue to look for the best timing for President Putin’s visit to Japan based on the common understanding reached between the two leaders on the occasion of the APEC meeting last November. I was informed that it was a meaningful meeting that affirmed the strong political will of the two leaders.
