Q&As
REPORTER: Today, the Memorial Ceremony to Commemorate the Fallen on the 70th Anniversary of the End of the Battle of Okinawa was held. What are your thoughts concerning the Battle of Okinawa, which was the largest ground battle ever fought in Japan?
CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: Today is the Memorial Day for the War Dead in Okinawa Prefecture. In World War II, Okinawa Prefecture was the site of a tragic ground battle. The people of Okinawa were caught up in the battle, which destroyed their peaceful lives and the bountiful seas and greenery of their homes, and caused the loss of 200,000 precious lives and irreplaceable property and assets. In addition to once again sincerely mourning the souls of the departed, on this day we also give thought to the feelings of our predecessors who endured such hardships and recognize anew our determination to seek permanent global peace.
