[Provisional Translation]

Opening Statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga

CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY SUGA: The bodies of three Japanese nationals who had their precious lives cruelly taken from them during the terrorist attack that occurred in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, on March 18, were returned to Japan today. I would like to pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and express my deepest condolences to their families. I would also like to wish for the rapid recovery of the three victims who were injured in the attack. With regard to the police’s response to this terrorist attack, following the return of the bodies of the victims and taking into account the addresses of the homes of the victims and other factors, yesterday the National Police Agency instructed the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Saitama Prefectural Police to jointly conduct an investigation. We will continue to work together with the relevant organizations, and make great efforts to gather information and elucidate the facts. The Government of Japan is greatly shocked and outraged by the terrorist attack and firmly condemns these despicable acts of terrorism. Japan will continue to exert maximum efforts to combat terrorism in cooperation with the international community.
