Based on the Cabinet Office Establishment Law (Law No. 89 of 1999), the Council for Science and Technology Policy was established inside the Cabinet Office in January 2001 as one of the "Councils on Important Policies." The Council, as a "source of wisdom" that assists the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, aims to oversee science and technology policies in Japan as well as plan and coordinate comprehensive and basic policies on science and technology from a vantage point higher than that of the various ministries. |
