1991Elected to the Fukushima Prefectural Assembly
1993Elected to the House of Representatives for the first time as an independent for the former Fukushima Prefecture 2nd District (40th General Election)
1993Joined the New Party Sakigake, sympathizing with the party's political ideal and policy
1996Took part in the foundation of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ)
Presently in his sixth term as the member of the House of Representatives
