Prime Minister Mori visited Seoul, Republic of Korea, from 19 to 21 October 2000 to attend the Third Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM3) and hold summit meetings with participating leaders.
Ten Asian countries (Japan, China, Republic of Korea, Brunei, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) and the fifteen European Union member states and the European Commission now constitute the membership of the ASEM.
The First ASEM (ASEM1) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 1996 and the ASEM2 in London, U.K., in April 1998. The ASEM3 was hosted by the Republic of Korea under the catchphrase: "Partnership for Prosperity and Stability in the New Millennium."
