Prime Minister Meets Uruguayan President

Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori met with President Jorge Luis Batlle of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The two nations marked the 80th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Uruguay. The two leaders exchanged views on wide-ranging matters focusing on bilateral relations, including economic exchange, such as trade and IT, and cultural exchange. Addressing the dinner hosted by the Prime Minister in honor of President and Mrs. Batlle, he noted, "Exchange has been widening between our two countries at various levels, including high-level government officials, the mission of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, joint private and public sector missions and Japanese NGOs." Prime Minister Mori further stated, "This visit by President Batlle is indeed significant in view of the fact that two nations, who share such common values as freedom, peace and democracy, can affirm our deep friendship and cooperative relations as partners at the dawn of the 21st century, an era in which the international community still faces many uncertainties."
