United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Rudolphus Franciscus Marie Lubbers, who took over from Sadako Ogata in January, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The Prime Minister congratulated the new High Commissioner and expressed his high hopes of his tenure, given the skilled leadership and deep insight he had shown as Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The Prime Minister also said that Japan would continue to provide assistance to UNHCR and would redouble its efforts as a humanitarian nation. The High Commissioner praised Sadako Ogata's achievements during her 10-year tenure and expressed thanks for Japan's assistance so far and for the Prime Minister's words.
