The First Meeting of the Conference
on the Creation of "Wa-no-kuni"
- an eco-society through partnership -
in the 21st Century
On 1 March 2001, the first meeting of the Conference on the Creation of "Wa-no-kuni" - an eco-society through partnership - in the 21st Century was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The conference was comprised of experts, including all members of the Cabinet, the private sector, local government and academics, and discussed the basic modalities of "Wa-no-kuni" and the direction of policy necessary for its realization. At the outset, Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori remarked, "We must make the 21st century a 'Century of the Earth' in order to protect the rich blessings of the environment and hand them down to our descendants. I would like to dub society in symbiosis with the Earth "Wa-no-kuni" - an eco-society through partnership -". He addressed the conference stating, "I am convinced that this conference, which has secured the participation of experts from a broad range of disciplines as well as the entire Cabinet, will prove undoubtedly significant."
