I am very pleased to know that, after the negotiations of approximately seven months, an agreement in principle on major elements for the Japan-Chile Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) has been reached between the Chief Delegates representing both countries. I recall that it was decided by the leaders of both countries to officially launch the negotiations for this EPA in last November 2005. This new EPA will encompass a wide range of trade and economic issues, including trade and investment liberalization. Japan and Chile have already been enjoying amicable relationship and close political and economic relations. This EPA will provide a comprehensive framework not only for closer and more stable bilateral trade and economic relations in mid-long terms, which will serve ensuring the stable supply of natural resources indispensable for Japan, but also for further strengthening the partnership between the Latin America and Japan. The Government of Japan is fully committed to continuing to actively work, in collaboration with the Government of Chile, toward the early conclusion of this EPA.
