Japan-Austria Joint Press Statement on the Occasion of the Visit by Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel of the Republic of Austria to Japan

Tokyo, 24 April, 2006


  • His Excellency Dr. Wolfgang Schuessel, Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria, visited Japan from April 23rd to 25th, 2006, on the occasion of the 15th Japan-EU Summit Meeting held in Tokyo on April 24th, 2006.
  • On April 24th, Federal Chancellor Schuessel was received in audience by His Majesty The Emperor. The Federal Chancellor and His Excellency Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan, held bilateral talks and discussed a variety of issues ranging from bilateral relations to international affairs.
  • The Austrian side and the Japanese side underlined the importance of strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries toward the 140th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation in 2009.
  • Both sides shared the view that they will promote exchanges through cultural events on the occasion of the anniversary in 2009, taking into account the results of the "2005 EU-Japan Year of People-to-People Exchanges."
  • Both sides shared the view that they will consider measures to promote people-to-people contacts between the two countries, particularly with regard to the younger generation.
  • Both sides shared the view about the good state of their economic relations and the importance of promoting trade and investment between the two countries.
  • Both sides took note with satisfaction of the past achievements of the Japanese-Austrian Committee for the 21st Century and shared the view that the Committee should be enhanced as a venue for further productive exchanges of opinions of eminent experts.
  • Both sides reaffirmed their intention to cooperate to support the efforts made by Western Balkan countries for the consolidation of democracy and the transition to market economy.
  • Both sides consider sound economic development to be an important contribution to the stability of the Western Balkans region. They expressed their intention to explore ways of possible cooperation in promoting investments in the region.
  • Both sides reaffirmed the importance of human security related efforts and expressed their will to cooperate in spreading the concept in various fora.
  • Both sides underlined the important role of the United Nations for international peace and security and reaffirmed the necessity of and their commitment to the implementation of the World Summit 2005 Document.
  • Both sides shared the view that, in order to effectively respond to the challenges in the 21st century, they will continue to vigorously pursue the UN reform process, including the reform of main UN bodies as referred to in the outcome document.
