Joint Press Statement

Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi, and President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Expressing their strong intentions to promote sustainable development for the benefit and well being of the present and future generations, Willing to make joint efforts with a view to further achieving the goals of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)held in Rio de Janeiro and the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development(WSSD) held in Johannesburg, and Recognizing that there are many opportunities between the two countries for a close and long-term cooperation in the field of sustainable development, including sustainable management of resources, and environmentally sound technologies and services, Expressed their intentions to launch a common agenda for sustainable development in order to advance consultations and cooperation between the two countries. The common agenda will include, inter alia, the following areas; Exchange of information and perspectives on such priority environmental issues as global climate change, protection of the ozone layer, biological diversity, sustainable use of forest resources, desertification, coastal area management and ocean issues which include sustainable use of marine living resources, fresh water resources, toxic and hazardous wastes, pollution management, urban policies, disaster management, and sustainable consumption and production including the 3Rs( Reduce waste, Reuse and Recycle resources) , Consultations on the respective positions on issues dealt with in multilateral fora related to sustainable development and environmental affairs, especially in the Commission on Sustainable Development, the United Nations Environment Program, and the meetings of Parties of international convenants in the fields of the environment, Exchange of experiences in the development of national strategies to implement the objectives of Agenda 21 adopted by UNCED, Exchange of information on environmentally sound technologies to address problems of mutual concern, especially in the areas of environmental assessment and monitoring, including remote sensing, Exchange of experiences and information in the areas of energy supply and development of alternative sources of energy, and conservation and sustainable use of biological resources, Exchange of information on measures for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and environmental protection, and Exchange of information on legislation and law enforcement related to sustainable development and environmental protection. "Japan-Brazil Dialogue on Environment", launched in March 2004, with the participation of relevant governmental agencies will serve as consultation forum for advancing the objectives of this common agenda, promote bilateral discussion on the issues listed above and any other related environmental issues of mutual concern. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Ministry of External Relations of the Federative Republic of Brazil will be the focal points in carrying out the common agenda for sustainable development. |
