Statement by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi

October 31, 2004

1.That Mr. Shosei Koda has fallen victim of terrorism, despite all possible efforts taken by the Government of Japan to secure his release from his captors, is most distressing and regrettable. I would like to offer my most sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Koda for their loss.
2.This act, which claimed the life of an innocent citizen, is an atrocity of the utmost contemptibility and arouses feelings of strong indignation.
3.Japan will continue to coordinate with the international community and provide humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to the people of Iraq by the Self-Defense Forces and maintain its unwavering stance in the fight against terrorism.
4.I sincerely ask for the understanding and cooperation of the people of Japan.
