Statement by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi

Today it has been announced that the decoding of the human genome has been completed by scientists from six countries, including Japan, the United States and European countries. This is truly wonderful news that marks a huge milestone in the area of life sciences.

The completion of the decoding of the human genome announced today is a landmark achievement that will go down in the annals of history in the development of life sciences. I believe that this achievement will continue to be honored for years to come as universal intellectual property secured for all humankind. In the future, I expect that everyone concerned will conduct further research and development towards a significant progress in health of all humankind, including the realization of "tailor-made medical care" that reflects differences in each and every person's genetic make-up.

The Government of Japan places the area of life sciences as a priority strategic field and is currently working to strengthen its measures. The Government will continuously cooperate with private sector to advance research and development in this area.
