Statement by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi |
November 21, 2002 |
I cannot help but express great shock and sadness upon hearing of the sudden demise of His Imperial Highness Prince Takamado.
Born as the third son of His Imperial Highness Prince Mikasa, as a member of the Imperial Family, Prince Takamado made wide ranging contribution in such fields as culture, sports, welfare, environment and international goodwill.
In particular, Prince Takamado exerted great efforts as Honorary Patron of the Japan Football Association at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, which is still fresh in the minds of the people of our nation.
Prince Takamado, who on various occasions interacted unaffectedly and warmly with the people, is held in deep respect by the people, who hoped for His Highness' continued active involvement in many activities. His Highness' unexpected passing thus has caused truly unbearable grief.
Extending my deepest sympathy to the members of the Imperial Family and other relatives of Prince Takamado, together with the people of Japan, I hereby would like to express my heartfelt condolences. |
