Statement by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
following the Summit Meeting with President Megawati Soekarnoputri of the Republic of Indonesia

January 12, 2002

1. During this visit to the Republic of Indonesia I am extremely pleased to have been able to meet and hold meaningful discussions with President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

2. The President and I share a common awareness that stability and prosperity in Indonesia is extremely important not only for Indonesia itself, but also for the stability of the entire Asia-Pacific region.

3. The President and I were also able to have a meaningful exchange of views, not only on bilateral relations, but also on wide range of issues regarding a community that incorporates Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and includes the presence of the United States and Europe. We also had a broad-ranging exchange of views on Aceh, and East Timor, as well as judicial reform, police reform and assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises in Indonesia.

4. Education is important for poverty reduction and giving the younger generation a chance; the President and I have established a scholarship fund for the children of Indonesia. I will be very pleased if this fund can be of some help in making the future brighter.

5. Today, friendly cooperative relations between Japan and Indonesia are becoming closer by "acting together and advancing together" as real partners. I will be very pleased if this visit to Indonesia and the summit meeting with President Megawati can contribute to further development of friendly cooperative relations between Japan and Indonesia, and I will do my best to ensure this.

Thank you very much
