First and Second Day of the G8 Summit

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi arrived in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation from Aqaba, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on the afternoon of July 15 (Japan time: night of the same day) to attend the 32nd G8 Summit.
In the evening (Japan time: midnight of the same day), Prime Minister Koizumi held talks with Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, the chair country for the summit. At the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi indicated Japan's basic policy of resolving the Northern Territories issue and concluding a peace treaty. He also requested that Russia, the chair country for the summit, express a strong message on behalf of the G8 countries as a whole regarding the issue of the launch of missiles by North Korea. Afterwards, Prime Minister Koizumi attended a dinner hosted by President Putin and Mrs. Putin. The G8 Summit was held on the morning of July 16 (Japan time: afternoon of the same day), and issues such as energy, nuclear development, and the launch of missiles by North Korea were discussed. Afterwards, the leaders talked with participants in the G8 youth summit. In the afternoon (Japan time: night of the same day), after holding a meeting with Dr. Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Prime Minister Koizumi once again attended the G8 Summit. Prime Minister Koizumi thereafter attended a working dinner held in Constantine Palace together with the other participating world leaders.
