Japan-Afghanistan Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Hamid Karzai, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, President Karzai expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Koizumi and the people of Japan for the assistance provided by Japan, which laid the groundwork for the reconstruction of Afghanistan. In addition, he indicated his intention to strengthen policing, administration, and the judiciary in Afghanistan, requesting a continuation of Japan's assistance. In response to this, Prime Minister Koizumi noted that Japan supports the reconstruction of Afghanistan with a resolve not to let the country become a hotbed of terrorism, and indicated that Japan's stance on continuing its assistance to Afghanistan remains unchanged as long as the country itself makes efforts toward its reconstruction.
