Green Feather Campaign
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi received a courtesy call from Ms. Michiru Hirabayashi, the 21st Japan Cherry Blossom Queen, and others who visited the Prime Minister's Official Residence on the occasion of the Green Feather Campaign, an event of the Greenery Week and the Green Funds. Ms. Hirabayashi attached a green feather pin to the Prime Minister's lapel and presented him with a rhododendron. Upon this visit for the Green Feather Campaign, Prime Minister Koizumi will be wearing the "Green Feather" in advance of the "Greenery Week" (from April 23 to April 29). The "Green Feather" has been known and become popular among the people of Japan since 1950 as a symbol of national land afforestation. Its name has been changed from "Green Feather Funds" to "Green Funds" in 1995. The fund serves an essential role in the creation of forests abundant in greenery by reforestation volunteers through such efforts as tree planting for the prevention of global warming and development of water source forests.
