Japan Prize Laureates Pay a Courtesy Call on Prime Minister
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi received a courtesy call from the Japan Prize laureates for 2006, the 22nd year of the awards, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence and talked with them. The Japan Prize is awarded to people from all over the world whose original and outstanding achievements in science and technology contributed to its progress and serve the cause of peace and prosperity for humankind. One Japan Prize laureate for 2006 was Sir John Houghton, who received the award for his achievements in "pioneering research on atmospheric structure and composition based on his satellite observation technology and for promotion of international assessments of climate change" in the field of Global Change. The other recipient was Dr. Akira Endo, who received the award for his achievements in "the discovery of the statins and their development" in the field of Development of Novel Therapeutic Concepts and Technologies. Prime Minister Koizumi talked with the laureates and discussed their fields of expertise, which include global environmental issues and blood-borne cholesterol.
