Japan-Cameroon Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with His Excellency Mr. Paul Biya, the President of the Republic of Cameroon, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "I welcome the development of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, which were prompted by the 2002 FIFA World Cup in which the Cameroon team achieved great success. I would like to strive to further reinforce the relationship between Japan and Africa through my visit to Africa from the end of this month." President Biya responded, "I expect to see further exchanges of our people in the future. I greatly welcome Prime Minister Koizumi's visit to Africa. By all means, please drop in on Cameroon next time." Concerning the reform of the United Nations Security Council, Prime Minister Koizumi asked the Cameroonian side for its continued cooperation toward realizing this end. President Biya expressed his support for Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the Security Council and his wishes for bilateral cooperation in seeking the reform of the United Nations and its Security Council. The dinner held after the meeting was joined by the wife of President Biya, Mrs. Chantal Biya, as well as Cameroonian Cabinet members and Mr. Shintaro Ito, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan. Participants exchanged opinions on ways to reinforce the relations between the two countries and other issues.
