Japan-Timor-Leste Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Mari Bim Amude Alkatiri, the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, Prime Minister Alkatiri pointed out the necessity of expanding the United Nations Security Council, saying, "While some countries do not necessarily support Japan becoming a permanent member, it is important that more countries participate in the Security Council for decision-making." As such, he reiterated his "support" for Japan becoming a permanent member of the Security Council. In response, Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his gratitude. In addition, Prime Minister Alkatiri discussed support for the fostering of human resources in Timor-Leste and his request for the opening of an embassy in Japan, among other topics, to which Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his intention to offer his utmost cooperation.
