Japan-Malawi Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika, the President of the Republic of Malawi, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, President Mutharika discussed the development of nation-building and economic reform thus far. In this regard, he gave his appraisal for the food aid extended by Japan and the activities carried out by Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), and also introduced the One Village, One Product movements in Malawi. President Mutharika expressed his intention to conduct national development in Malawi with emphasis placed on energy, infrastructure, trade, agriculture, and tourism, and as such, requested further assistance from Japan. In response, Prime Minister Koizumi noted that the Japanese people are also proud of the activities conducted by the JOCV in Malawi and expressed his gratitude for such a high appraisal. He indicated his intention to provide concrete and necessary assistance in the future. After the meeting, the two leaders attended a signing ceremony where an Exchange of Notes for grant aid to the Republic of Malawi was carried out.
