A meeting of the Central Disaster Prevention Council was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, decisions were made on the Designation of Disaster Management Promotion Areas against Trench-type Earthquakes around Japan Trench and Chishima Trench, General Principle of measures against Trench-type Earthquakes around Japan Trench and Chishima Trench, and Basic Policy for Volcano Disaster Countermeasures for Large Areas in the vicinity of Mt. Fuji. All the decisions were approved subsequently.

In closing the meeting, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said, "I myself have visited Banda Aceh (in Sumatra Island) and saw the devastation caused by the tsunami. As Japan is an advanced nation for coping with tsunamis, I ask that thorough efforts are made towards each relevant measure."
