Prime Minister Receives a Report of the Tax Commission
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi received a report on the FY2006 tax system revisions from Mr. Hiromitsu Ishi, the Chair of the Government Tax Commission, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The report states, "The people are calling for the government to advance thorough administrative and fiscal reforms in all areas and eliminate waste in the public sector," emphasizing the need for expenditure reforms. While pushing forward the expenditure reforms on the one hand, the report, in regards to necessary common social costs, states that these costs must be widely and fairly shared amongst all people through efforts made in the areas of both system and enforcement. Based on such recognition, the report further incorporates challenges for individual tax items such as treatment of fixed tax reduction on individual income tax, simplification of the classification of alcohol taxes, wider use of tax revenues earmarked specifically for road construction and other items, abolishment of the public disclosure system for income tax and others, and the early implementation of inhabitant tax deduction from the public pension.
