Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum)
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the opening ceremony of the second annual meeting of the "Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum)" which took place in Kyoto City. The STS Forum, with the participation of approximately 500 opinion leaders of various sectors including politics, economy and science, from over 60 countries and regions, is designed to discuss issues such as global warming, cloning and infectious diseases, under the theme of "lights and shadows of science and technology" over the course of three days. Prime Minister Koizumi delivered a keynote address in English, in which he stated, "Protecting our beautiful environment comes at a cost. There are many people who think that efforts to protect the environment would hold back the progress of economic development. This is not the case. Environmental protection and economic development are mutually achievable and sustainable. It is science and technology that hold the key to achieving the dual goals."
