Japan-Pakistan Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Shaukat Aziz, the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the meeting, the two leaders exchanged opinions on such topics as cooperation on measures against international terrorism and economic assistance. Prime Minister Aziz remarked that, "We must continue our fight against terrorism, which is posing a serious threat to the entire world, and should never yield to it," while noting on the experience of the assassination being plotted against General Pervez Musharraf, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, and himself. Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "We must learn not to give in to the threat of terrorism and instead engage in countermeasures through strong leadership." In addition, Prime Minister Aziz expressed his gratitude for the resumption of new yen loans which had been halted since 1998 when Pakistan conducted an underground nuclear test. Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "Human resources development will also be important in the days to come," and shared his intent to provide comprehensive economic assistance. Prime Minister Koizumi announced at a meeting with President Musharraf this April that Japan will resume its yen loans to Pakistan. In light of the dayfs meeting between Prime Minister Koizumi and Prime Minister Aziz, documents on the provision of approximately 16.4 billion yen worth of yen loans including such projects as the gLower Chenab Canal System Rehabilitation Project,h the first yen loan project since the resumption, were exchanged in Islamabad on August 10.
