With regard to the United Nations (UN) Security Council reform, Prime Minister Koizumi remarked, "This year stands a great opportunity to realize the reform of the UN and the UN Security Council, and Japan is strongly seeking to realize the reform. As such, I would appreciate it if Canada supported Japan's position." To this, Prime Minister Martin responded, "While each country holds a different position over this issue, I agree with you in that this year serves as a great opportunity, and comprehensive reform of the UN must be achieved." On the morning of July 7 (Japan time: evening of July 7), the issues of global economy and climate change were discussed at the summit meeting. The leaders of the G8 countries, the leaders of the emerging economies and relevant officials of international organizations issued a joint statement condemning the terrorist attacks which took place that same morning in London. Prime Minister Koizumi also issued a statement regarding these bombing incidents. That same afternoon (Japan time: midnight of July 7), Prime Minister Koizumi held a meeting with Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation at a hotel in Gleneagles. At the meeting, President Putin commented, "I am pleased that I was able to exchange in-depth opinions with former Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori upon his recent visit to Russia. We discussed various international issues and the bilateral issues at great length." In response, Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "I have heard about the meeting from former Prime Minister Mori in great detail.
