Prime Minister Attends the Ceremony of the Commemoration of the Sixtieth Anniversary of the End of the Second World War

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the Ceremony of the Commemoration of the Sixtieth Anniversary of the End of the Second World War in Moscow.

In addition to Prime Minister Koizumi, the ceremony was attended by the leaders and representatives of 56 countries and international organizations, including Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, Mr. George W. Bush, the President of the United States (US), Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Jacques Chirac, the President of the French Republic, Mr. Gerhard Schroeder, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and Mr. Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). President Putin called upon the international community to unite to tackle new threats such as terrorism.

On the afternoon of May 9 (Japan time: evening of May 9), Prime Minister Koizumi held a summit meeting with Chancellor Schroeder at a hotel in Moscow. Both leaders shared the view that it was important for Japan and Germany to cooperate closely with a view to realizing UN Security Council reform. After the Japan-Germany Summit Meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi paid his respects at the Japanese Cemetery, located inside Lyublino Cemetery.

On the evening of May 9 (Japan time: midnight on May 9), Prime Minister Koizumi held a summit meeting with President Putin at the Kremlin. After the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "We discussed the development of cooperative relations between Japan and Russia in accordance with the Japan-Russia Action Plan." He also said regarding President Putin's potential visit to Japan, "We agreed to consider this in a forward-looking manner in order to make it happen."
