Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Participates in the Commemorative Event to Mark the Entry into Force of the Kyoto Protocol
On this day that the Kyoto Protocol has entered into force, a commemorative event to mark its entry into force was held in Kyoto to celebrate this memorable occasion as it is considered to be a significant step in international efforts to address the issue of global warming. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted in this same city in 1997 at the "Third Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP3)." In the tail end of a program, "Relay of Messages from around the World," leaders and other representatives from eight countries and three organizations, including Prime Minister Koizumi and Mr. Kofi Annan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, conveyed their messages live in a relay format from around the world. Prime Minister Koizumi started off the relay of messages through the teleconference system installed in the Prime Minister's Official Residence and said, "The Kyoto Protocol has entered into force today. I would like to extend my gratitude to the people around the world who have worked hard for this day since its adoption approximately eight years ago in December 1997. The entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol signifies a great step forward for the prevention of global warming. Let us cooperate with all the people of the world to preserve our precious earth for our children and our children's children."
