"Development of Measures against Global Warming and Heat Island through Urban Renaissance Projects" was adopted at the meeting as the Eighth Urban Renaissance Project. This project aims to lower the increasing temperature in the central urban areas and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by comprehensively and intensively promoting measures against heat island and global warming while at the same time achieving urban development, mainly targeting areas where large-scale realignment and advancement of land use will be implemented, such as the Areas Designated for Urgent Development for Urban Renaissance. A report was also given on the measures for renaissance of creative and distinctive urban areas across the country, including the projects for achieving a nation built on tourism and partnership with sister cities. In closing the meeting, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said, "The measures for urban renaissance are starting to achieve progress not only in the major cities but in all regions from Wakkanai City to Ishigaki City, the northern- and the southernmost cities in Japan. I intend to continue developing the measures for urban renaissance in a wider range of areas by taking full advantage of the energy of the private sector such as further enhancing and strengthening environmental measures in accordance with urban renaissance."
