The TICAD Asia-Africa Trade and Investment Conference (TICAD-AATIC) discussing measures to develop industries and promote investment among the Asian and African countries was held at a hotel in Tokyo.

Relevant officials from approximately 60 countries from both regions participated in this meeting. At the opening session, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi delivered a speech to the audience, which included Mr. Mwai Kibaki, the President of the Republic of Kenya and Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Prime Minister Koizumi expressed Japan's intention to provide assistance for the development of industrial infrastructure and enhancement of competitiveness of the African countries by saying, "The government's role is indispensable for ensuring that trade and investment lead to economic growth and result in poverty reduction."

Over the course of two days, the participants seek to understand the current situation and issues of trade and investment between the two regions with a view toward industrial development and promotion of investment in the African countries which are suffering from poverty, and they also discuss specific policies for the future.
