The Awards Ceremony of the Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

Sponsored by the Japan Professional Sports Association, the Japan Professional Sports Grand Prize is awarded each year to the individual or group that is deemed to have made the largest contribution to overall professional sports throughout the country.

Selected to receive the Grand Prize for the year 2003 was Major League Baseball player Hideki Matsui of New York Yankees and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi presented him with the Prime Minister's Cup.

Prime Minister Koizumi received a bat and a stadium jacket from Mr. Matsui, and said "It's nice to play catch in this jacket in winter. At least I will look like Matsui", while practicing his swings.
