Japan-Indonesia, Japan-Viet Nam and Japan-Cambodia Summit Meetings
Click photographs to enlarge Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held talks respectively with the leaders of Indonesia, Viet Nam and Cambodia who are visiting Japan to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Japan Commemorative Summit Meeting. Prime Minister Koizumi first held talks with Ms. Megawati Soekarnoputri, the President of the Republic of Indonesia who will serve as co-chairs at this Commemorative Summit Meeting with him, then individually held talks with Mr. Phan Van Khai, the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and Mr. Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia. During the series of the meetings, Prime Minister Koizumi explained our decision to dispatch the Self Defense Forces (SDF) to Iraq was made for the purpose of building infrastructure for the basic daily needs of the people of Iraq, and not to participate in combative activities and asked for understanding from the leaders. Furthermore, during his talks with Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia, Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his intention to provide both financial and personnel cooperation regarding the establishment of Extraordinary Chamber to try the leaders of the former Pol Pot Regime. Prior to those meetings, Prime Minister Koizumi delivered a keynote speech at the "ASEAN-Japan Investment-Business Alliance Seminar (AJBIS)" held in Tokyo and expressed his stance to seek for enhancement and stabilization of the financial system in the ASEAN region through Japan cooperating in developing regional bond markets and promoting bond issues dominated in the local currency basis in the ASEAN region.
