Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held talks with members of the New Japan-China Committee in the 21st Century at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the Japan-China Summit Meeting held respectively at the celebration for the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg this May and at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting this October, Prime Minister Koizumi and Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of the People's Republic of China, agreed on establishing the "New Japan-China Committee in the 21st Century" where experts from both countries who discuss and make recommendations on the bilateral future relations to both governments, aiming for extensive exchanges.

Mr. Yotaro Kobayashi, the Chairman of the Board of Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., as the Japanese side's chair of the New Japan-China Committee in the 21st Century and Ms. Chiaki Mukai, an astronaut, were among the members who visited the Prime Minister's Official Residence to pay respects to Prime Minister Koizumi before their departure to attend their first meeting to be held in China from December 5.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "China is not a threat, but possesses an aspect of chance and opportunity. I would like you to discuss the future relations between Japan and China with a 'future-oriented focus', including matters related to the dream of the people."
