Japan-Mexico Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi held talks with Mr. Vicente Fox Quesada, the President of the United Mexican States on his visit to Japan as an official guest, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the summit meeting, the two leaders confirmed to further develop their friendly relations in various areas including science and technology, as well as to strengthen their economic partnership. They then agreed on the framework document concerning the "Japan-Mexico Partnership Programme," in which the two nations cooperatively aim to work for expanding their assistance to developing nations in such regions as Central and South America. Furthermore, regarding the consultation on the conclusion of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the two leaders agreed to continue to make efforts toward its realization. They also exchanged opinions on various areas including issues of Iraq, North Korea, terrorism and the environment. Specifically regarding the issue of North Korea, Prime Minister Koizumi requested for President Fox's understanding and cooperation toward the solution of the abduction issue. In response, President Fox expressed his understanding and support for the efforts of Japan in working to solve this issue. After the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi and President Fox together signed and announced the framework document concerning the "Japan-Mexico Partnership Programme." During the announcement, Prime Minister Koizumi said, "This visit by President Fox to Japan has added a new page to the expanding friendly relations between Japan and Mexico." A joint statement was then announced which confirmed what the two leaders discussed during the meeting, such as the Japan-Mexico relations and issues of Iraq and North Korea.
