Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, currently visiting three countries -the Federal Republic of Germany, Republic of Poland and Czech Republic- left Berlin, Germany on the morning of August 19 (evening of August 19 Japan time) and arrived at Warsaw, Poland, the next country of his visit.

In the afternoon of the same day (night of August 19 Japan time), Prime Minister Koizumi held talks with Mr. Leszek Miller, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland at the Belwedere Palace in Warsaw City. During the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi explained the basic position of Japan with regard to the issue of North Korea that seeks to comprehensively solve the nuclear, missile and abduction issues. In response to this, Prime Minister Miller expressed his full support for the position of Japan.

After the meeting, the two leaders held a joint press conference and announced the "Joint Statement towards Strategic Partnership between Japan and the Republic of Poland" which focuses on their cooperation for the reconstruction assistance for Iraq , as well as the issue of North Korea and strengthening their relationship in various fields in accordance to the enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004. After the press conference, Prime Minister Koizumi visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in the city and offered flowers.
