Japan-Germany Summit Meeting
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi left Haneda Airport on August 17 to visit three European countries, the Federal Republic of Germany, Republic of Poland and Czech Republic and arrived in Berlin, Germany, the first country on his visit, in the afternoon of the same day (midnight of August 17 Japan time). The following morning (evening of August 18 Japan time), Prime Minister Koizumi held talks with Mr. Gerhard Schroeder, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany after attending the welcome ceremony held at the Chancellor's Office. During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged opinions on issues such as the nuclear development issue of North Korea and reconstruction assistance for Iraq and Afghanistan. At the joint press conference held after the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi said, regarding the issue of North Korea, "Japan strives for a peaceful and diplomatic solution with North Korea. With the six-way talks around the corner, Chancellor Schroeder expressed full understanding and support for the views of the Government of Japan regarding the abduction and the nuclear issue." The Prime Minister also said, regarding the humanitarian and reconstruction assistance for Iraq, "I have recognized that there is much for us to accomplish as a responsible member of the international community."
