First Day of the G8 Summit
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi who finished his itinerary in Russia arrived in Evian-les-Bains, France, to attend the G8 Summit meeting. The first day of the summit started with the "Enlarged Dialogue" between the G8 and 12 emerging or developing countries including China. The Enlarged Dialogue was established as a forum of new initiative for North-South dialogue by Evian Summit presidency holder, France. At the meeting, Prime Minister Koizumi pointed out the importance of partnership between developed and developing countries as well as cooperation among developing countries. That evening, the G8 and four major African countries held a dialogue, where they made a final agreement on the Implementation Report which reviews the implementation of the Africa Action Plan (AAP) agreed at the G8 Summit in 2002. The Report includes the contributions of Japan, which Prime Minister Koizumi previously announced, such as the food assistance as part of measures to eliminate hunger and support for the eradication of polio announced previously by Prime Minister Koizumi, as well as Japan's holding of the 3rd Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD III) in September. |
