Representatives of the Japanese Team of International Peace Cooperation in East Timor paid respects before their departure to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
This international peace cooperation team consists of 522 personnel of the third Engineer Unit to be dispatched to East Timor, who will undertake road and bridge maintenance and repair work necessary for peacekeeping operation activities, and seven personnel assigned as staff to the United Nations Mission Headquarters in East Timor, all of whom will depart Japan progressively after the month of March. Prime Minister Koizumi addressed the representatives, stating, "When I visited East Timor last year I felt for myself that all of the team members were cheerfully and enthusiastically fulfilling their roles despite the searing heat. I expect that each of you will demonstrate the results of your long training and preparation and thereby show how actively Japan is contributing to the international community." The Prime Minister shook hands with each of the representatives and offered his encouragement.
