Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi met with Secretary of State Colin L. Powell of the United States of America at the Iikura House of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Secretary of State Powell arrived in Japan this afternoon to discuss the situation in Iraq and the issue of nuclear development in North Korea as the first stop on a trip to consult with Japan, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea on these issues. During the meeting, there was an exchange of views regarding the content of the new United Nations Security Council Resolution expected to be submitted by the United States. Prime Minister Koizumi stressed the importance of international cooperation and stated that he hoped to see the United States make even greater efforts in the Security Council. Regarding nuclear development in North Korea, the two agreed on a policy of addressing the issue through close cooperation among Japan, the United States and the Republic of Korea with a view to achieving a peaceful solution.
