Sixth Meeting of the Advisory Group on International Cooperation for Peace
Wednesday, December 18, 2002
The sixth meeting of the Advisory Group on International Cooperation for Peace was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
In light of the address made in Sydney in May this year by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, the Advisory Group on International Cooperation for Peace has considered how Japan should cooperate for the "consolidation of peace and nation building" in countries that are suffering from conflict.
At the meeting, a report on the discussions was adopted and handed to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi by Chairman Yasushi Akashi.
The report noted that in the current situation, global action to counter inter-state conflict and terrorism across national borders was now necessary to assure the security of each and every country, while also underscoring that it was necessary in Japan to build a national consensus on expanding Japan's activities in international peace cooperation areas.
Furthermore, the report proposes concrete measures to improve and strengthen international peace cooperation including the following: improve and expand the structure for promotion of international peace cooperation, active dispatch of civilian specialists and civilian police, development of legislation toward more flexible international peace cooperation, broader international peace cooperation activities, and extended utilization of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in the international peace cooperation area.
After accepting the report, Prime Minister Koizumi stated that he intended to refer to it as he redoubled efforts to further advance Japan's cooperation for peace in the international community.
