Representatives of the Japanese Team of International Peace Cooperation in East Timor Pay Respects to Prime Minister Before Departure
Friday, September 6, 2002
Representatives of the Japanese Team of International Peace Cooperation in East Timor paid respects before their departure to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
Following the independence of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, the United Nations established the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET), a peacekeeping operation (PKO) succeeding the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). Based on its policy to cooperate as much as possible toward nation-building in East Timor, Japan has decided to continue its dispatch of the Japanese Team of International Peace Cooperation for UNMISET.
This second team dispatched is composed of approximately 700 personnel, and will take over duties from the first team dispatched in February of this year, conducting maintenance and repair work for roads and bridges necessary for PKO activities.
Receiving the report of their assignment from the representative of the team, Prime Minister Koizumi offered encouragement to them. |
