Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi attended the annual Hiroshima Memorial Service for the Dead and Peace Memorial Ceremony held in Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima.

In his address, Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "Being the only country ever to have experienced nuclear devastation, based on its determination that the horrors brought upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki should never be repeated, Japan observes its Peace Constitution, firmly maintaining the Three Non-Nuclear Principles of not possessing nuclear weapons, not producing them, and not permitting their introduction into its territory. There will be no change to this position in the future." The Prime Minister further stated, "Japan leads the international community in promoting nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation and in making utmost efforts to abolish nuclear weapons." Prime Minister Koizumi also expressed his intention to make efforts to promote support measures for the atomic bomb victims, looking squarely at their circumstances as they advance in years.

After the end of the ceremony, Prime Minister Koizumi visited the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, which just opened this month, and offered flowers.
