The first meeting of the Biotechnology Strategy Council was held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
As biotechnology (BT) has developed remarkably in recent years, it has become important in applying its achievements to practical use and industrialization, leading to the improvement of people's lives and the enhancement of industrial competitiveness. This Council was set up with the objective of establishing and promoting a BT strategy for Japan. It is composed of 12 knowledgeable members, in addition to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and relevant Cabinet ministers.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Koizumi stated, "I would like you to engage in active discussion and compile strategies for how Japan should address this issue by the end of this year."
